About the Author

Captain Shem Malmquist, FRAeS, has worked in the aviation industry since 1976 when he was flying and working at Cable Airport in Southern California doing airport maintenance and servicing aircraft.  His experience ranges from teaching aerobatics and instructing in a wide variety of both general aviation and transport aircraft to academic research and safety investigation.  During his early years he was mentored by famed Lockheed test pilot Tony LeVier, and through Tony, became enamored with the technical side of aviation.

Captain Malmquist is currently visiting professor at the Florida Institute of Technology as well as a Boeing B-777 captain for a major carrier operating worldwide.  In addition, he is an Air Safety and Accident Investigator, and has held key roles in several major investigations, including that of Party Coordinator.  His previous experience includes Flight Operations Duty Officer, Assistant Chief Pilot. Line Check Airman, ALPA Aircraft Technical and Engineering Chairman,  Aircraft Performance and Design Committee MEC Chair, Charting and Instrument Procedures Committee, Group Leader-Commercial Aviation Safety Team-Joint Safety Implementation Team (CAST)-Loss of Control-Human Factors and Automation, CAST-Joint Implementation Measurement Data Analysis Team, and CAST Aircraft State Awareness – Design Team. He has holds an MS in Human Factors in Aeronautics from the Florida Institute of Technology, a BS in Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle University and an AS in Commercial Flight from Mt. San Antonio College. He is an elected Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (FRAeS) and a Member of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators (ISASI).  He is also a member of the Resilience Engineering Association, IEEE, AIAA, SAE, AFA, HFES and FSF.  This site is a collection of articles he has written for various publications.
